What is Eastern white cedar and why is it used for shingles?
Eastern white cedar is a highly durable wood that is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insects. Its fine grain and light weight make it easy to install, and over time it weathers to a beautiful silver-grey patina if left untreated.
Can I use cedar shingles for both roofing and siding?
Yes — cedar shingles can be used for siding and, depending on grade and local building code, roofing. Always check with your installer or local building authority to confirm you are using the appropriate product and installation method.

Do cedar shingles need to be treated before installation?
Cedar shingles contain natural preservatives that help resist rot and insects, so they do not require treatment. However, you can stain or finish them if you want to achieve a specific aesthetic or additional surface protection.
What finishes or stains are available?
Cedar shingles can be left natural to age over time or finished with stains — such as solid stain or semi-transparent finishes — to enhance colour and weather resistance. Factory-finished options may also be available on select products.
How should cedar shingles be maintained?
Maintenance typically involves periodic cleaning to remove dirt, moss or buildup. Avoid pressure washing, and re-stain or seal areas as needed to preserve appearance and performance.
How long do cedar shingles last?
When properly installed and maintained, cedar shingles can last several decades. Eastern white cedar has a long track record of performance in a wide range of climates.
What is the difference between cedar shingles and cedar shakes?
Cedar shingles are machine-sawn on both sides for a smooth, uniform appearance, while cedar shakes are typically split on one side, giving them a more rustic, textured look. Both are made from Eastern white cedar and are popular for cottages in Muskoka and custom homes throughout the GTA.
Do you supply cedar shingles and cedar shakes in Muskoka and the GTA?
Yes. We supply Eastern white cedar shingles and cedar shakes throughout Muskoka, the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and surrounding regions. We work with homeowners, builders, and contractors on both cottage and residential projects.
Are cedar shingles a good choice for Muskoka cottages?
Absolutely. Eastern white cedar shingles perform exceptionally well in Muskoka’s climate. They naturally resist moisture, rot, and insects, making them ideal for waterfront cottages, seasonal homes, and year-round residences exposed to snow, rain, and humidity.
Are cedar shingles suitable for homes in the GTA?
Cedar shingles and cedar shakes are a popular siding choice for GTA homes due to their durability, insulation value, and timeless appearance. They work well on modern, traditional, and heritage-style homes throughout Toronto and surrounding areas.
